Curing of Plastisol Inks / Colours

Curing Steps for Plastisol Inks:

Curing your prints is the last step of the screen-printing process, but it is one of the most important steps. Ink needs to be cured suitably so it sets into the clothing. If the ink does not cure fully, it will crack, fall apart, and not last for long.

Step 1: Plastisol Inks/Colour Curing Via Heat Gun

For plastisol ink, apply the heat gun to the garment until it is dry to the touch. Make sure you are holding it directly above the print.

Step 2: Plastisol Inks/Colours Fusing or Curing Via HEAT PRESS

A heat press is fundamentally a conveyor dryer without a belt and is an excellent way to cure inks as it offers a stable heat source. It gives a readout of any temperature fluctuation while you are using it.

Curing with a heat press is incredibly simple. Use light to medium pressure. Place a heat-resistant non-stick sheet on the print. Press for 7-15 seconds. Plastisol inks cure at temperature in the range of 180 – 220 degrees celsius.

How long do you cure plastisol inks?

Curing Guidelines: Manual at 105°C/220°F 7 12 seconds cure 180°C /320°F Shelf-Life Storage. Note: For screen printing plastisol ink, it is mandatory to heat for curing the print as it is oil/plastic-based ink.

FAQ about Plastisol Inks

Full curing means that ink needs to reach that temp from the top to the bottom layer.

Should I stir plastisol ink before using?

Why does my ink sometimes crack?

Cracking plastisol ink is almost always under-cured. If required, add stretch additives to the ink and this will frequently solve this cracking issue.

How to calculate how much plastisol ink is needed for a print job?

The most correct technique of determining ink cost is to weigh an un-printed fabric or t-shirt, then print your design on it, then weigh it again. This weight will precisely tell you how much ink you are using. Then simply calculate your cost of ink per gram, and there is your cost per print.

Is plastisol ink washable?

When the screen-printing process is done correctly, both water-based and plastisol ink will not wash out. However, plastisol ink has the tendency to chip or crack when you wash it in very hot water or put it in a rough spin cycle.

Is plastisol ink flammable?

Compared to other inks and materials used in shirt printing, plastisol inks carry incredibly low risk to you and the environment. It’s not flammable, explosive, or hazardous so it’s easy to dispose of the ink properly.

How long does plastisol inks last?

While cracking and fading will eventually happen naturally, as all things do with age, they should last over 100+ washes. Plastisol inks are made to last and keep their brightness over the life of a t- shirt. It maintains its colour, and should not peel or crack.
